Hair Piece, Wig, or Hair Transplant?

Posted on 19 May 2012 by admin

Hair loss sufferers around the world often consider hair pieces or wigs as a way of concealing their hair loss, but when is a hair piece or wig the right choice over hair transplantation? The criteria people use differs, and often, people who choose hair systems don’t know enough about them to make an educated choice.

From a hair transplant doctor’s perspective, low donor density or no donor hair is the main reason a person might choose a hair piece or wig. If there aren’t enough follicles in the donor area, a hair transplant is impossible so this narrows the solution to hair pieces, wigs, shaving the head, or learning to live with hair loss.

From a patient perspective, cost may be a factor, although as with anything, you get what you pay for. You see hair pieces advertised for as low as a couple of hundred dollars, but these are “off-the-shelf” wigs that look unnatural and are not custom fit for a persons head shape or hair loss pattern. A good, natural hair, hair system, tailored to your head shape and hair loss pattern, can cost as much as a few thousands dollars. Although these hair pieces seem like a lower cost alternative to hair transplantation, one must consider that they need to be maintained, cleaned and re-fitted regularly, and are attached with glue, tape, and sometimes a surgical procedure that hooks a wire into a skin flap upon the scalp. For someone who does have enough donor hair for a hair transplant, a hair system may seem like a good alternative, but when you add hassle and the insecurity of wearing a piece to the equation, is the savings worth it? Perhaps not. There are many lady’s wigs and men’s wigs online, but you must make sure what you are getting when you buy, not all hair pieces and wigs are created equal.
