Artas Hair Transplant Robot

April 29, 2011
The Artas Hair Transplant robot has received FDA 510 clearance. The manufacturer, Restoration Robotics announced that FDA cleared their computer assisted, image guided robotics system has been cleared by the FDA for hair transplantation, specifically follicular unit extraction. FDA 510 clearance means the company can market the system. The FUE robot is said to solve most of the technical challenges a hair transplant doctor faces when performing follicular unit extraction. The system is operated under the direction of an experienced hair transplant doctor. The Artas FUE robot is capable of identifying individual follicular units (naturally occuring hair bundles) and harvesting them. Although the system aids in the extraction, the doctor will still have to create recipient sites and the doctor and/or technicians still have to insert the grafts manually as in the current standard of care.

Robot May Solve Problem Inherent to FUE

The Artas hair transplant robot may solve the “blind harvesting”, high graft transection rate, and cost associated with current FUE techniques, which is why the vast majority of hair transplant doctors go with follicular unit extraction via strip. In FUE, once the punch tool sinks belows the skin’s surface, the doctor cannot see what it is doing and may then transect follicles. The Artas FUE robot utilizes computer imaging which provides a very high degree of precision that drastically reduces transection rates.

Herbal Hair Loss Remedies? http://hairrestorationnews.net/herbal-hair-loss-remedies/ http://hairrestorationnews.net/herbal-hair-loss-remedies/#comments Thu, 22 Jul 2010 16:41:19 +0000 admin http://hairrestorationnews.net/?p=67 Hair loss sufferers desperate to get help for their thinning hair turn to all kinds of products: laser therapy, laser combs, accupuncture, shampoos, and herbal hair loss remedies. Herbal hair loss remedies are big business on the Internet and sellers make all kinds of wild claims about the efficacy of herbs with little evidence to support their claims. Like most things in life, if it seems to good to be true, it probably is.

The list of hair loss cures is lengthy, but few natural hair loss cure studies have been undertaken. One study, often used in the marketing pitches of people who sell Saw Palmetto, was printed in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (2002;8:143-52), but, the Saw Palmetto study, with a test group of only 19 men, can hardly be called definitive “evidence” and its results are suspect. The fact is, if natural hair loss remedies did work in any significant way, we’d know about it. There would be a general acceptance in the medical community that a “cure” for hair loss has been found, and you’d have to be careful not to be trampled on the way to the local supplement store to get your bottle of the herbal hair loss cure.

Hair Transplant Growth? We ask: How Long Does It Take? http://hairrestorationnews.net/hair-transplant-growth-we-ask-how-long-does-it-take/ http://hairrestorationnews.net/hair-transplant-growth-we-ask-how-long-does-it-take/#comments Sat, 10 Jul 2010 17:26:54 +0000 admin http://hairrestorationnews.net/?p=60 The question most hair transplant patients ask about hair restoration surgery (besides the cost) is “How long will it take to grow?”. Dr Victor Hasson of Hasson & Wong Hair Transplant Clinic provides the answer. “Typically, it takes a full year to see the final result, but most patients will experience significant growth between 6 and 10 months. Of course all patients are different, some will see growth earlier, some later. Patients must be…patient (he laughs).”

Dr Hasson provided HairRestorationNews.net a time-lapse video of growth over a one year period.

More Women Choosing Hair Restoration over Wigs http://hairrestorationnews.net/more-women-choosing-hair-restoration-over-wigs/ http://hairrestorationnews.net/more-women-choosing-hair-restoration-over-wigs/#comments Tue, 29 Jun 2010 17:14:41 +0000 admin http://hairrestorationnews.net/?p=55 The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons, a non-profit of over 700 hair transplant doctors, is seeing a steady increase in the number of women undergoing hair restoration surgery. One such patient, Angela Roisten, battled hair loss most of her adult life. In Angela’s case, her hair loss was caused by pulling her hair into tight braids and weaves. The cause of hair loss in Angela’s case was twofold: Traction Alopecia and Female Pattern Hair Loss. Traction Alopecia is caused by friction, or a pulling tension on hairs. In most cases, if that stress is removed, hair grows back, but in some cases, where hair has been pulled tight or subject to friction for years, the follicles eventually die and are unable to produce more hair. Years of tight weaves and braids likely caused the condition in Angela’s case.

In addition to traction alopecia, Angela also suffered from a female pattern hair loss, a genetic condition. Like their male counterparts, some women will experience a generalized thinning of the hair as they get older. Women suffer the condition in varying degrees. In worst cases, women are left with a frontal fringe and very diffuse, see-through hair on the rest of the head. Unlike in men, the frontal hairline is not affected in women.

Minoxidil, the only hair loss drug approved for use in women, may result in a thickening of existing hairs, and in some cases grow hair, but for many women, Minoxidil does not stop hair loss.

Angela, like an increasing number of women, opted for a permanent solution to her hair loss: hair restoration surgery. She wasn’t willing to endure a lifetime of the inconvenience of wigs.

“Since we first started polling ISHRS members five years ago about trends in their practices, we found that the percent of hair restoration surgical patients worldwide who were female increased from 11.4 percent in 2004 to 13.8 percent in 2006 and 15.1 percent in 2008,” said Dr. Epstein. “Women simply do not want to be committed to wearing wigs and hair extensions, and baldness is not acceptable in women as it is in men.”

Actress Sue Holderness

Sue Holderness, the actor who portrays bouffant-haired Marlene on BBC’s Only Fools And Horses, could only achieve that “big hair” with the help of wigs. Holderness has recently revealed that she has been a hair loss sufferer since her mid 30s. After having children in her 30s, the actor says she began losing hair, dramatically, sometimes coming out in clumps, leaving bald patches on her scalp.

Holderness consulted specialists, but doctors were unable to tell her exactly why her hair was falling out.

“With women, there are lots of different reasons, but with men hair loss tends to be inherited,’” says Dr Peter Williams, of The Hospital Group.

“Women tend to get thinner hair all over because as they age they have less oestrogen circulating and this means they not only grow less hair, but it becomes thinner too.’”

Marilyn Sherlock, of the Institute of Trichologists, adds: “There is always a cause for hair loss, but occasionally it can be something as innocuous as having had a fever.  The high temperature kills the hair, but it won’t fall out for about three months. Healthy hair requires all vitamins and minerals and being low in certain ones, especially iron, can lead to thinning because iron is vital for new hair cells. A crash diet can lead to quite dramatic hair loss too.”

When Sue Holderness began menopause, her hair loss accelerated. The actor suffered anxiety and panic attacks over her hair loss, that was only exacerbated by the fact that she was in the public eye and her appearance was vital to her livelihood.

The only available non-surgical treatment for women is Minoxidil, a topical medicinal ointment that stops hair loss and in some cases grows hair. Before being treated, however, women must first consult a specialist to see if there is an underlying illness causing the hair loss.

Now, Ms. Holderness has her hair back, and lots of it. She attributes the growth to a healthy diet, and a regimen of vitamin products. Doctors, however, remain skeptical that such products provide a cure for hair loss. “‘Whether or not this product works I don’t know, but because there are so many different causes of hair loss I find it unlikely that one pill will help everyone.”

Aderans Treats 100th Subject in Hair Regeneration Trials http://hairrestorationnews.net/aderans-treats-100th-subject-in-hair-regeneration-trials/ http://hairrestorationnews.net/aderans-treats-100th-subject-in-hair-regeneration-trials/#comments Sat, 03 Apr 2010 13:00:24 +0000 admin http://hairrestorationnews.net/?p=21 Aderans Research Institute Inc (ARI), has achieved a significant milestone in Phase 2 of its cell-based hair regeneration study by treating the trial’s 100th hair loss subject. In the coming months, the study will double the number of participants.

So far, the study has been conducted in eight US cities and will likely comprise up to 16 US metro areas. In Phase 2 of the hair regeneration study, the trial will be testing a number of regiments designed to achieve a hair cell regeneration. In the treatment, cells are extracted from hair-bearing tissue and new cells are cultivated in a laboratory and reintroduced to the scalp where they are expected to grow.

In Phase 1 of the study in the UK, more than 30% of subjects being treated with the new hair regeneration technology showed a response to the technique, though the growth response was negligible and the test group quite small. Current, hair transplant surgery seems to be the only reliable technique for restoring hair.
ARI purchased the technological assets of its main competitor in cell regeneration technology applied to hair
regrowth, Intercytex of the UK.

Pat Hennessy, publisher of HairTransplantNetwork.com, visited Intercytex operations in the spring of 2007 and has said:

“While they appeared to have good management and promising preliminary results, their subsequent Phase II testing on humans failed to produce cosmetically significant hair regrowth. It’s suggested that the key to success may lie in growing stem cells in vitro to a hair follicle stage and then transplanting the hair follicles using today’s state of the art surgical hair restoration techniques.”

In purchasing Intercytex, Aderans hopes to accelerate their own hair regeneration efforts. “This acquisition is a major step forward for ARI,” said Vern Liebmann, Vice President, Operations. “Through this deal, we’ve been able to consolidate the majority of key patents and know-how in the hair regeneration field, an achievement that can accelerate our ability to deliver a commercially viable product to market.

Aderans Research Institute Acquires Intercytex http://hairrestorationnews.net/aderans-research-institute-acquires-intercytex/ http://hairrestorationnews.net/aderans-research-institute-acquires-intercytex/#comments Thu, 25 Mar 2010 16:15:53 +0000 admin http://hairrestorationnews.net/?p=12 Aderans Research Institute (ARI) has purchased technology assets from Regenerative Medicine Assets Limited (formerly Intercytex Group plc), a UK based hair regeneration research company.

“This acquisition is a major step forward for ARI,” said Vern Liebmann, Vice President of Operations. “Through this deal, we’ve been able to consolidate the majority of key patents and know-how in the hair regeneration field, an achievement that can accelerate our ability to deliver a commercially viable product to market. This acquisition was only possible thanks to the considerable financial support of Aderans Holdings Company, Ltd., of Japan.”

Aderans is a publicly held company and one of the world’s largest manufacturers of wigs. Aderans owns Bosley hair restoration, a widely known chain of hair restoration clinics. Aderans Research Institute studies the development of cell based hair restoration therapy, referred to as hair multiplication.

The purchase of InterCytex by ARI comes at a time when ARI is about to start phase 2 of research into cell-based hair regeneration.
